More and more companies allow their employees to go to work with their pets. And working around animals reduces stress, improves communication between partners and increases satisfaction at work. To carry it out, make sure that all staff agree, especially those employees who do not have pets, and establish basic rules to ensure a good atmosphere.
All employees must agree
To avoid uncomfortable situations, make sure that the animals will be well received by staff. It would be advisable to check if the people closest sufferers from any allergy by pet hair, or feel some kind of phobia towards animals.
Even the most docile of dogs can become hostile in an unfamiliar environment or in the presence of other animals. To be safe, it would be advisable to make a written agreement where animal owners commit to assume any damage caused by your pet.
Choose the days of the week where pets are accepted
Working between animals can be wonderful but it can also be a distraction. So, that productivity is not affected, you can choose certain days of the week you can go to the office with the pet.
Limiting the number of animals
Another issue to consider is the number of pets that can be taken without being a nuisance to other workers, in other words, define the “animal capacity”. A good solution is to share a calendar where the team can register by date and compatibility with the rest of the pets.
Pets must have a limited area where move. It is a good idea prohibit or establish rules for meeting rooms or resting places that the team use to eat.
Safe spaces for animals
It is very important to check the areas where animals can access. Objects must be removed or protected and keep containers closed, especially garbage. We know the curiosity of our pets and we do not want any frights. It is also good idea to place a bell to the smaller animals to avoid stepping on them if you do not have sight of them.
Create a committee for pets
There need to be a group of people responsible for the organization and supervision of pets who can share opinions, about the experience of working with animals, and also where the employee suggestions are collected.
Carry everything you need
The pet owners should ensure carry everything that the animal may need to spend comfortably the day (food, toys, bed, etc.) and everything needed for cleaning possible physiological accidents (plastic bags, detergent, brush, roller removes hairs, etc.)
When NOT take your pet to the office
There will be circumstances in which the best option will be to leave your pet at home:
- If it is not in perfect health and all daily periodic treatments (vaccines, worming, hygiene, etc.) to avoid spreading germs or parasites to other animals or people.
- If it is overactive. In these situations we will have to assess leaving our pet at home or limit the visiting time to not disturb colleagues or other animals.
- If aggressive. It would be reckless to go to work with an aggressive animal that present that type of behavior because it could be dangerous for pets and other staff.
- If it is very afraid of people. It could be a torture for the animal because, inevitably, people will come to greet or just be close to them.
